Mario Bauza says his music is AfroCuban Jazz, Not Latin Jazz

Cubans having a dance move to every genre was a phenomena I caught early on during our trip there in 2015. On the nightclub scene to contemporary music, everyone in the place would get up to do the moves that went with the song. Lol of course we joined in! Dances according to genre is part of our African Diasporic legacies. What Bauza says I have heard from various musicians as well as someone pointing out that Celia Cruz, in her memoir, said that for commercializing and marketing purposes distinct AfroCuban styles were smushed under the “salsa” umbrella. This tracks. And makes sense given the LOOOONG history of the U.S. never disaggregating anything coming from Latin America. It is viewed as a big “mixed” beige “Latin” bubble. We know that to be untrue. And this is also why Mario Bauza speaks to his music being AFROCUBAN jazz and not “Latin jazz.” This “pan-Latino” identity got y’all in a dangerous chokehold. Let’s leave fantasy for a second and get to reality. And it starts by reflection, unlearning and relearning. We have upcoming classes in August!
