Gestação Anembrionada

Anembryonic Pregnancy - Understanding What It Means One of the main causes of miscarriage, anembryonic pregnancy, can occur in 20% of spontaneous abortions in women. It consists of the absence of an embryo, leaving only the gestational sac, empty inside – hence the name "Blighted Ovum" – and usually causes no symptoms. The reason for the formation of an anembryonic pregnancy is unknown. It occurs when the sperm unites with the egg but stops developing in the first few days, leaving only the accessory cells that give rise to the gestational sac and placenta. The diagnosis is made by ultrasound, when after six weeks only the gestational sac appears without an embryo. Before six weeks, an anembryonic pregnancy can be suspected when the yolk sac is not visualized, but as a result, the diagnosis is confirmed with more than one ultrasound. Treatment may involve waiting for the body to eliminate it on its own, or performing a curettage or a manual vacuum aspiration (MVA).
