12th JBC Classic JpnI November 5, 2012, Kawasaki Racecourse, 2100m Winner: Wonder Acute [Race Results] https://www2.keiba.go.jp/KeibaWeb/Tod... [Race Review] Burning in the straight, he pulls away by 5 lengths Third time's the charm: Winning JpnI The JBC Classic JpnI has a history of 11 years, up until last year. It's widely known that every winner other than the regular members of the first race has gone on to win two or three consecutive races. Therefore, compared to the JBC Sprint JpnI, this classic has the impression of being a much more determined race. However, looking at the results over the past five years, the first and second favorites have accounted for eight of the top 10 finishers, clearly demonstrating this. However, this year's race saw the sudden retirement of Smart Falcon, the undisputed champion who had won the race twice in a row until last year, two months prior, regional powerhouse Furioso taking a break, and central dirt champion Transcend returning from his break since Dubai, resulting in a highly competitive JBC Classic. Wonder Acute, the fifth-favorite in the bet, won. "Just as planned, I took him to the outside and went for it. It's been a while since I've seen this horse race like this," jockey Ryuji Wada's comments say a lot about the race. Wada expressed his joy at Wonder Acute's long-awaited first Jpn I G1 victory by raising his right hand high. Wonder Acute got off to a great start, but Magnifica pushed forward and quickly took the lead, with Transcend then making a move from the outside. Wonder Acute held back and followed in third place. Testamatta was a little eager behind him, with Solitary King, who had won three straight races up until the Nippon Television Hai Jpn II, trailing behind him. Civil War, who had been performing well in recent races, gradually worked his way up from the back of the pack. Solitary King made the first move on the home stretch, followed by Civil War, who surged into the lead and set the race in motion. Magnifica dropped back, but after the third corner, Transcend, Solitary King, and Civil War took the lead, running side by side. It was jockey Wada on Wonder Acute who delayed his move by a beat. Just before the fourth corner, he was pushed out to the outside of the three horses, and then in the straight, he broke through the center of the track with authority. Civil War made an early move and finished second, five lengths behind. Transcend was unable to hold on and finished third, three lengths behind. Next came Solitary King and Testamatta, and with Furioso absent from this field, JRA horses once again dominated the board. Wonder Acute had shown glimpses of his potential many times before. The prologue was last May's Tokai Stakes (GII), where he surged forward to win in record time. In the autumn's Japan Cup Dirt (G1), he overtook Espoir City from behind and finished second, two lengths behind Transcend. Then, in the Tokyo Daishoten (G1), he held his own against Smart Falcon, who was trying to break away. Though he finished second in a photo finish, it was a close contest where either horse could have won. Trainer Masao Sato, who manages Wonder Acute, expressed relief at his long-awaited Jpn I title, saying, "Third time's the charm, and we've finally made it here." However, following a crushing defeat in his previous race, the Tokai Stakes, the horse seemed to be feeling his way around this race. "He didn't have much of a track record after the break, so I was honestly a bit worried," said jockey Wada. His weight was down 21kg from his previous race, but down 7kg from his strong performance in the Tokyo Daishoten. The horse himself was clearly in good shape. In the upcoming G1 races, the Japan Cup Dirt and the Tokyo Daishoten, will Wonder Acute make a run for it? Will Transcend, who was beaten a bit, make a comeback? Will Espoir City, who dominated the Nanbu Hai Jpn I, still show no signs of slowing down? Or will Roman Legend, an up-and-coming horse who won his sixth consecutive dirt race in the Miyako Stakes GIII the day before, emerge? This autumn's showdown of the top older horses on dirt is likely to be a highly competitive, close contest. [Comment] Jockey Ryuji Wada I've always thought he had G1-caliber potential, and I've always dreamed of him, so this was a dream come true. There were tough times, but I was convinced he would win someday. This horse is capable of performing at this level when he's really strong, and I feel like he finally managed to do just that this time. Trainer Masao Sato He had been coming back from pasture without any issues, but this horse's weight fluctuates drastically. He was down 21kg this time, which I thought might be about 10kg from his best weight, but I think his body felt good. He still had the speed he showed at Oi, so I had a feeling he might win. With this momentum, we'll aim for a JRA G1 race. Text: Osamu Saito Twit...
