👉Flocculants, also known as filter media, are used to improve the water quality of swimming pools. Generally intended for use with sand and filter glass like AFM, flocculation significantly increases the efficiency of your filter. Many substances that would normally pass through the sand or filter glass are clumped together by flocculants into larger aggregates, which can then be filtered out by your sand filtration system. ✅ ▬▬ Why using flocculants is hygienic and beneficial ▬▬ 👉Traditional sand or filter glass retains virtually all impurities present in pool water, even those barely visible to the naked eye. Depending on the particle size, surface structure, and flow rate, filtration can be even finer, but it does have its limits. Many particles and substances, such as makeup, sunscreen, skin creams, saliva, mucus, very small plant debris like dead algae, small organic particles, fine dust, humic substances, etc., cannot be filtered. These substances remain in the pool. Only flocculation makes them filterable. ▬▬ How Flocculants Work ▬▬ 👉 Flocculants – usually aluminum salts in private pools – are positively charged. The fine particles mentioned above are mostly negatively charged and repel each other. They therefore do not clump together naturally. Thanks to the positively charged flocculants, the negatively charged particles are attracted and form fairly large aggregates. These aggregates, unlike individual particles, can be filtered. Finally, backwashing physically removes the particles from the pool. Without this removal process, chlorine would have to break down organic matter and kill a large number of microorganisms. Since these particles and microorganisms are no longer present in the pool water, the amount of chlorine needed decreases. ▬▬ Filter Balls and Flocculants ▬▬ 👉 Filter balls are not compatible with traditional flocculants. The clumps could clog them. However, filter balls already offer significantly better filtration precision than sand or even filter glass.
