The Rome negotiations between Lebanon and Israel entered their second day amidst a cautious atmosphere, a mix of political optimism and persistent technical and security disagreements. According to information from both sides, the first round achieved progress and was described as positive, but it did not reach a final agreement on the mechanisms for implementation and withdrawal. The main point of contention revolves around what are known as "trial zones." The Lebanese side insists that any Israeli withdrawal begin from areas currently occupied in southern Lebanon, with the Lebanese army deploying directly within them. Israel, on the other hand, maintains a gradual and limited plan, linking any further withdrawals to the results of the first phase and the success of the security arrangements on the ground. In recent hours, an Israeli request has emerged seeking clarification on the mechanism for verifying that the areas will be free of any armed activity after the withdrawal, as well as on how the Lebanese army will be deployed and how the Lebanese state will maintain its security control. In the political background, the American factor remains a significant presence, as the primary sponsor of the talks. The issues under discussion are gaining further momentum with talk of a potential visit by the Lebanese president to Washington, at a time when media leaks indicate American pressure on Israel to push for a gradual withdrawal from Lebanon and Syria.
