Dance Artist in an Environment of Excellence Young dancer Sri Ayu Pradnya Larasari never lacks energy. Born in Gianyar on December 16, 1997, she performs in various venues throughout the year. From piodalan (devotional performances) at various temples in Bali, she then appeared in the colossal Sabang Merauke dance and music performance in Jakarta. Some time later, Larasari visited Yogyakarta as a judge at a dance festival there. In the city of students, Larasari visited dance maestro Eyang Didik Nini Towok. In 2025, while incredibly busy preparing for the Rarung Atarung dance drama performance at the Bali Arts Festival (PKB), she didn't just train her dancers for the stage. In the morning, she focused on training the dancers and musicians for the Rarung Atarung performance. In the afternoon, Larasari readily refuses to accept the numerous dance students who come, requesting private lessons at her studio, Nrthyagraha Siwanatara, in Sukawati, Gianyar. Or vice versa, teaching in the morning, preparing for the performance in the afternoon. Rarung Atarung is a dance drama she created for PKB, an annual Balinese arts festival that is "Balinese's most prestigious arts stage." Anyone who studies Balinese arts—dance, gamelan, puppetry, whatever—can be said to share the ultimate dream: performing at PKB. Whether they live in a city or village in Bali, in Jakarta, or as a foreigner abroad, their dream is the same. Rarung Atarung seems to reflect one of Larasari's strengths. She is a dance artist who continues to explore the ancient art form of Calon Arang. Larasari often performs as Calon Arang, Ni Rarung, and even Rangda. Rangda is the magical incarnation of Calon Arang, usually played by a male dancer. It's no wonder, Rangda's costume, from head to toe, weighs a total of several tens of kilograms. This dance graduate from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Bali, lives with a deep love for Balinese art. Her home in Sukawati is a gathering place for artists and academics. Her father, Kadek Suartaya, is a gamelan artist, a Doctor of Cultural Studies, a lecturer at ISI Bali, and a prolific art analyst, writing in the media and books. Larasari's older brother (her only sibling), I Bagus Wijna Bratanatyam, is an accomplished puppeteer and Master of Puppetry who also teaches at ISI Bali. As a puppeteer, Bratanatyam follows in the footsteps of their grandfather, who was also a puppeteer. Their mother, Ni Made Sudiasih, is a cultural studies teacher at a vocational high school. Sudiasih retired in 2025. As a young woman, Larasari had a strong desire to instill in her younger generation a love for Indonesian traditional arts. That's why she enthusiastically participated in workshops, served on the jury, and taught at studios, in addition to performing as a dancer and choreographer.
