The Maccabean Revolt, which occurred in the 2nd century BC, was one of the crucial events in the history of the Jewish people and the region of Judea. The scenario was marked by the influence of the Seleucid Empire, led by Antiochus IV Epiphanes. This Hellenistic ruler sought to impose cultural and religious assimilation, provoking resistance and indignation from the Jews who opposed such changes. The trigger for the revolt occurred when Antiochus IV ordered the desecration of the Temple of Jerusalem, looting it, desecrating sacred objects, and establishing an altar dedicated to the Greek gods. The imposition of Hellenistic religious practices, the prohibition of Jewish rituals such as circumcision and Sabbath observance, and the persecution of those who refused to accept these changes intensified the dissatisfaction and inflamed the passions of the Jewish population. In this context of oppression, the figure of Mattathias, a Jewish priest, and his sons, led by Judas Maccabeus, emerged. The murder of a Jew who agreed to sacrifice himself to the Greek gods served as a catalyst for the revolt. Resistance gained strength with popular uprisings, and the Maccabees led a military campaign against the Seleucid forces. One of the most symbolic moments of the revolt was the recovery and purification of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Maccabees, an event celebrated to this day in the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. The temporary restoration of Jewish independence under the Hasmonean dynasty marked an important phase in the history of the Jewish people. However, despite initial success, internal conflicts and Roman influence in the region eventually led to the fall of the Hasmonean dynasty and the annexation of Judea to the Roman Empire.
