Maelstrom: Ambrosia’s Classic Asteroids Clone for Macintosh. Blasting Rocks Like Its 1992!
One of the early shareware smash hits to come in color, Andrew Welch’s Maelstrom blends the classic rock dividing game of asteroids with power-ups & hazards, new ways to gain high scores, and wacky sound effects that also be customized by the user. YesterYear’s Mac Games reviews the game that propelled Ambrosia Software to the forefront of classic Macintosh Gaming, remaining a firm favorite for many, for years to come. Blasting onto the scene in 1992, players take control of a plucky boarder patrol pilot, who managed to get caught in an expansive asteroid belt known as ‘The Maelstrom’ while on their way to the Stratocoaster R&R facility. It wasn’t limited to the Classic MacOS either, Maelstrom got a new lease of life when it was ported to SDL by Sam Lantinga, with versions hitting Linux, OSX, Windows, UNIX, and even iOS.
