In this week's video I am diving deep into the Julio-Claudian Dynasty (aka Rome's very first imperial family) to explain the origins of emperors Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. Narratively, I focus mainly on plotting the succession of Augustus and Tiberius' rise to power, but various important side characters also get a look in (including everyone's favourite ruffian Mark Antony!). Mainly though, I hope that this video highlights the important role that the Julio-Claudian women played in defining the dynasty and succession as we know it - not just the major players of Livia, Octavia and Agrippina, but also the often side-lined figures of the Antonias. There is much more to be said on this topic, so I hope to explore the roles of the younger generations of Julio-Claudian imperial women in more depth in a future video on the succession of Caligula, Claudius and Nero... For further in-depth plotting of the family trees of Rome's famous senatorial families and how they are linked to the Julio-Claudians, I could not recommend anything more highly than reading Ronald Syme's 'The Roman Revolution'.
