The Polish economy is at its peak in 2025. Gross domestic product is growing at over 4% annually, unemployment hovers around 5%, and infrastructure and defense investments are breaking historic records. Poland has become the European leader in defense spending, allocating approximately 5% of GDP to this purpose, which translates to over 150 billion złoty annually, with a target of over $40 billion. This is a remarkable success; for the past 30 years, the Polish economy has grown the fastest among OECD countries; only China has recorded even faster growth. Currently, in terms of GDP per capita, Poland overtakes Greece by second place in the global rankings. This would have been unthinkable just 20 years ago, when Greeks were almost three times wealthier than Poland. Back then, however, the entire world was captivated by the Greeks' success, and the mounting internal economic problems, which were hidden from the world, weren't necessarily noticed. The economy was booming, just like in Poland in 2025. But Poland and Greece are two completely different economies, and I personally don't entirely agree with the German press, but let's take them one at a time—because we need to look at this from the perspective of the eurozone. The key difference: Poland isn't in the eurozone. In theory, this allows for more flexibility (the possibility of currency weakening), but in practice it means there's no rescue mechanism in the form of the European Central Bank. If a crisis of confidence were to occur, the pressure on the złoty would be enormous. But we have a hedge against this scenario in the form of vast gold reserves—the National Bank of Poland (NBP) made the largest purchases of this precious metal globally, which is why the złoty is incredibly strong today. The risk isn't that Poland is already teetering on the brink of collapse. On the contrary, we're currently on the cusp of a downward spiral—strong GDP growth, low unemployment, and an influx of investment. But history shows that crises come at times of complacency. A high structural deficit, rising debt servicing costs and political dependence on social transfers are factors that can turn success into a problem in times of a global slowdown or a sudden increase in financing costs.
