Tulsa, Oklahoma. 1924. Built as a car garage. Turned into a dime-a-dance joint. Became a dancing academy. Then in 1935, a fiddler from Texas walked in with nowhere else to go — and everything changed. Bob Wills had been barred from every stage in Texas and Oklahoma City by a vengeful former manager. He walked into Cain's Ballroom, made a deal with KVOO radio, and started playing. Every day. A noon-hour broadcast. A midnight show. Weekly dances that thousands came to from across the Great Plains. From 1935 to 1942, Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys used Cain's Ballroom to build something nobody had heard before — western swing. Country music crossed with jazz, hillbilly, boogie, blues, big band swing, rhumba, mariachi and jitterbug. The sound that changed American music. The maple spring-loaded dance floor. The four-foot neon star above it. The silver disco ball. The fiddle-shaped light fixtures with red bulbs. The oversized portraits of Bob Wills, Hank Williams, and Ernest Tubb on the walls. They call it the Carnegie Hall of Western Swing. The Blue Collar Palace. The Home of Bob Wills. The man who owned Cain's for twenty years said ten full books could be written about what happened here. Thousands of people are married because of Cain's. Bob Wills came here with nowhere left to play. He left having changed American music forever. The neon star is still on. The maple floor still springs under your boots.
