Ablauf einer Lungenkrebs-Operation
In this video, Chief Physician Dr. Preissler from the Robert Bosch Hospital explains in detail how lung cancer surgery actually works. We discuss the entire procedure and look at what happens before, during, and after the surgery. The topics covered are: Before the surgery: Medications: Discuss with your doctor whether and which medications, especially blood thinners, need to be discontinued before the surgery. Hospital admission: You will not be admitted to the hospital until the day of the surgery, allowing you to continue your normal daily routine until then. Quitting smoking: It is recommended that you quit smoking two weeks before the surgery to aid your recovery. However, it is not mandatory. Fasting: You must not eat anything for six hours before the surgery. Surgical techniques: Minimally invasive surgery: The most common method – cameras and instruments are inserted between the ribs without opening the chest. Open surgery (thoracotomy): Rarely performed for lung cancer. Lobectomy and pneumonectomy: Depending on the size of the tumor, a lobe or, in rare cases, an entire lung is removed. After surgery: Recovery process: Drains drain air and fluid, and you will be closely monitored. Initial mobilization and breathing exercises begin immediately after surgery. Hospital stay: The stay typically lasts 8 to 9 days. Potential complications: Risks include wound infections, bleeding, and nerve injuries, especially in patients who have already received chemotherapy or radiation therapy. After discharge: Rehabilitation or post-operative care may be beneficial, especially if you have breathing difficulties. Full recovery usually takes 6 to 8 weeks. Quitting smoking: Quitting smoking after surgery will support your recovery and help you maximize your remaining lung capacity.
