Luke 1:1–25 1 Many have attempted to write about the things that have happened among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 It seemed best to me, most honorable Theophilus, to research everything carefully from the beginning and write it down for you in order, 4 so that you may know the reliability of the things you were taught. 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the lineage of Abijah. His wife, also a descendant of Aaron, was named Elizabeth. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. 8 One day, when his turn came, Zechariah served as priest before God in his line. 9 According to the custom of the priesthood, the lot was cast for Zechariah to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 Now all the people were praying outside. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw the angel, he was terrified and fearful. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah. God has heard your prayer. Your wife Elizabeth will give you a son, and you are to name him John. 14 He will be a joy and a delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will drink no wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from birth. 16 He will turn many of the people of Israel back to the Lord their God. 17 He will go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” 18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 The angel answered, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I have been sent to tell you this good news. 20 “Look, you will be mute and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will all come true at that time.” 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were amazed because he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he was unable to speak to them, so they assumed he had seen a vision in the temple. He made signs to them but remained speechless. 23 When his ministry was over, Zechariah returned home. 24 Later, Elizabeth, Zechariah’s wife, became pregnant and remained in hiding for five months.
