The monument was the centerpiece of the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, designed and organized to celebrate the advances achieved at the turn of the 19th century. Steel, stone, and glass, the Grand Palais was a collaborative project by architects Henrique Deglane, Alberto Louvet, and Alberto Thomas, under the supervision of Charles Girault. In its more than century-long history, the Grand Palais has had multiple uses. In recent decades, the monument has established itself as a Parisian cultural space. In 2024, at the Paris Olympics, the Grand Palais became even more renowned. The monument hosted the official fencing and taekwondo competitions. To host the games, it underwent a major renovation, a process that lasted four years. The transformed monument reopened to the public in 2025.
