When the "mystery" caused by a mononoke attacks people, a mysterious man known as the "medicine seller" suddenly appears. Armed with the only weapon in the world capable of slaying and exorcising Mononoke, he stands alone before the raging Mononoke. "Mononoke" has been a beloved work since its broadcast as the omnibus "Bakeneko" in 2006 and as a TV anime series in 2007. Now, in 2024, "Mononoke" will be "reborn" as a feature film set in the Ooku. The film depicts a gorgeous world like a picture scroll, with meticulous yet sometimes bold art, innovative techniques combining CG with washi paper textures, and a one-of-a-kind visual beauty created by a huge number of cuts and unique color usage. Combined with the medicine seller's mysterious charm, the film's dense worldview is overwhelming. Furthermore, the story's depiction of the universal themes that are relevant today - the hardships of life when one is forced to kill the individual and become part of the group - as well as the karma and desires swirling within humans - will resonate deeply. In these chaotic times, where the seeds of Mononoke threaten to take root in anyone's heart, a heartbreaking yet powerfully soul-stirring tale of salvation emerges. This all-new theatrical film, brought together by a stellar cast and crew under the direction of series creator director Kenji Nakamura, will carve a new legend. ❁Story The Ooku is a special place that is both a "women's garden" where beautiful and talented women from all over the country are gathered to produce an heir for the "Emperor," who rules the world, and an important bureaucratic organization. Newly hired maids, Asa (Tomoyo Kurosawa) and Kame (Aoi Yuki), step into this unique space, a "society" with its own unique rules. Asa is a beautiful and intelligent woman seeking to advance her career, while Kame seeks her place in the Ooku, a place she longs to belong. From their first day, these two polar opposites are forced to participate in a "ritual" to be integrated into the group, in which they offer "something precious to" the "Omizu-sama," a deity worshipped within the Ooku. An incident that occurs there sparks a bond between the two. The elder lady, Utayama (Koyama Mami), puts the prosperity and perpetuation of the Ooku first and brings the maids together, but behind her expressionless face she hides something. Meanwhile, little by little, something begins to envelop them. The women's passions build with each passing night, a strange sound like the rattling of a Chinese umbrella echoes from nowhere, and the maids lose their senses as if possessed... Finally, a decisive tragedy occurs, and the medicine seller (Kamiya Hiroshi) pursues the Mononoke to the heart of the Ooku, but the demon-slaying sword that can slay and exorcise the Mononoke cannot break the seal unless it possesses the three elements of "form," "truth," and "reason."
