Монетные дворы России. История появления
The very first Russian mints were established by wealthy merchants, who minted coins from various metals and denominations, causing confusion and constant disputes among traders. The first coin production in Moscow appeared during the reign of Ivan the Terrible and was called the "Sovereign's Mint." Minting workshops also existed in the Novgorod, Tver, and Pskov principalities. Since there were no uniform currency standards, trust in the currency was low. The issuance of the "Monetary Decree" of 1595 marked the beginning of major changes in coinage. The first markings appeared, indicating the place where the coin was produced. Under the Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov, all mints, even the oldest ones, were liquidated. Only Moscow remained the only place where coinage was produced. The next milestone in the production of state currency is directly linked to Peter the Great. Along with the monetary reform, minting operations were modernized. Patterns, profiles of tsars, edge inscriptions, and sometimes the monograms of medalists began to appear on coins. In the early 18th century, a temporary "College" Mint, later known as the "Petersburg Mint" (SPB), opened in St. Petersburg. This mint production facility was located in the Peter and Paul Fortress. In the 18th and 19th centuries, coin production facilities also existed in other cities of the Russian Empire. Historically, by the end of the 19th century, only one mint production facility remained, located in St. Petersburg. When the Great Patriotic War began, it was decided to relocate part of the strategic production to the city of Krasnokamsk near Perm. This mint (KMD) lasted five years and finally ceased operations in 1946. The Moscow mint production facility did not produce coins for several decades. But since 1942, the production facilities have been used to produce state awards. The country needed orders, medals, and insignia, which became the mint's main product. In Moscow, coin production changed its status from temporary to permanent only in 1983. The tradition of marking coins was revived shortly before the collapse of the USSR. During the Soviet era, coins minted at the Moscow and Leningrad mints were marked as LMD, L, M, and MMD. Thus, having traveled a complex and interesting path, coin production in Russia is now represented by two mints – Moscow and St. Petersburg.
