They strengthened the fortifications, built new buildings, and transformed the city into a bustling commercial center. Galle became a key port for the Dutch East India Company’s trade with the East Indies, and the city’s strategic location made it an important center for naval operations. The port city of Galle continued to serve the Dutch until the British took control of Galle in 1796 and established a new administrative system. They made significant changes to the city’s infrastructure, including building new roads and bridges and introducing new technologies such as railways and telegraph lines. Galle continued to thrive under British rule and became an important center for the cultivation and export of tea, rubber, and other crops. Today, the city is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage-listed fort. Galle’s vibrant cultural scene and friendly locals make it a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
