An elevated PSA level is not synonymous with prostate cancer. Many people receive a test result showing a PSA level above the reference value and immediately assume the worst. In practice, PSA levels can rise for several reasons—and a large portion of them have nothing to do with cancer. The test alone does not provide a diagnosis. The doctor makes the assessment, considering the patient as a whole.
