Nenthead : The Italian Miners riot of 1905 and celebrating the 200th anniversary of the village
buymeacoffee.com/rossendalecollieries The small Village of Nenthead on Alston Moor has a rich mining heritage stretching back perhaps 2000 years. Much of the village as we know it today was established 200 years ago by the London Lead company who were by far the biggest company leasing the mines around Alston Moor at that time. By the end of the 19th century that company was gone and lead mining proved to be unprofitable, however Zinc turned out to be the mineral now in demand and Nenthead was rich in this resource. In Time a Belgian Company took over the mines and introduced radical new mining methods and an even more radical workplace practices. The District now employed a very diverse workforce with men from all over Europe now living and working in the Nenthead area. When the company brought in a more authoritarian management regime it was only a matter of time before trouble and unrest came to this once quiet backwater. Today we explore these events and those which lead up to them. We also visit the village celebrations of the 200th anniversary. All music in this Video is properly licenced and purchased from Pond 5.
