Comment peindre les OMBRES à l'aquarelle avec théorie et exercices
From beginner to expert level, everything you need to know about painting shadows in watercolor. 00:00 Intro 00:17 Definitions 02:00 Placing Shadows 14:00 Shadow Colors 17:37 Photo Analysis and Errors 🔑 Definitions Cast Shadow → around the object, often bluish or gray. Occlusion Shadow → the darkest, in contact with the surface (I don't use it much in the video) Self Shadows → on the object itself, darkened local color. Reflections in Shadow → bright touches in the shadow. 🔑 The basic rules (but hey, you know what I think about rules: the framework is there to learn, then to be removed to experiment and understand, then to have fun) A cast shadow is never truly black, but rather a colored gray: In watercolor, a pure black shadow flattens everything. It must contain color, and often the color of the context (light, surface, object). Outdoors, shadows often take on the tint of the sky (often bluish). Indoors, they are tinted with the color of the walls or ambient light (e.g., warm lamp → slightly orange/brown shadow). To darken a color to create a clean shadow and lay the foundation for a cast shadow, think about its complement and experiment with darker or lighter shades. Shadow of a red object → red + a hint of green or blue-green for an orange-red. Shadow of a yellow object → yellow + a little purple. Shadow of a blue object → blue + a bit of orange or directly brown. Shadow of a green object → green + a touch of red to make khaki or directly a bit of purple. The cast shadow always echoes the object's color. A yellow lemon will have a yellowish-gray shadow, not pure blue. 🎨 Some practical "shortcut" recipes to try for homework: Cobalt blue + burnt sienna → balanced warm gray. If you use cerulean instead of cobalt, you'll get a very soft result right away, easier to balance, but be careful of graininess. Ultramarine blue + natural umber or sepia brown (my favorite) → cool shadow. Diluted violet (dark cool red like alizarin + blue) → deep, transparent shadow. You can paint the local color (the object's color), then apply a transparent wash (blue, purple, or colored gray) to create the shadow → brighter than mixing everything on the palette. 🌞 Light and Atmosphere Bright sun: bold, bluish shadows, sometimes very sharp. Crummy weather: soft, slightly colored shadows, often more grayish. Warm artificial light: purplish-brown shadows, sometimes reddish. 👉 In summary: choose the shadow color by mixing a hint of the object's color + the ambient light hue + a touch of complementary color. That's it! And if a point isn't clear, or you want to explore further, ask questions without fear, no pressure, just progress! 🖌️ Materials: Winsor & Newton tubes, Isabey brushes, and Moulin du Coq paper, the red one. - 🤙 Instagram: @felicia.watercolor Website: feliciawatercolor.com The book "Petit Précis d'Aquarelle" is available in all good bookstores.
