Glaucoma, arriva il tris di molecole che protegge dalla neurodegenerazione

Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness, affects one million people in Italy, yet approximately half are unaware of it. While until recently the only therapeutic approach for glaucoma consisted of reducing intraocular pressure, mitochondria have now become a therapeutic target, with treatments aimed at preserving their function. Among the new solutions available today is a trio of molecules (pyruvate, nicotinamide, coenzyme Q10) capable of improving mitochondrial energy function and protecting them from neurodegeneration. These three molecules act synergistically to stimulate mitochondrial function, increasing energy production and protecting retinal ganglion cells from oxidative stress and apoptosis. In this video interview, we discuss this with Luca Agnifili, associate professor and head of the Regional Glaucoma Center at the G. d'Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara. #glaucoma #eyes #ophthalmology #neurodegeneration #ophthalmology
