In 1938, the American psychologist and ethnologist Clarence Ray Carpenter captured 500 macaques in India and brought them to Cayo Santiago, a remote and uninhabited Caribbean island. His project was to study a primate population roaming free, in a giant open-air laboratory. How do the monkeys organise themselves socially? Troop wars, discrimination, nepotism, abuse of power or even “coup d'état” on the one hand - and maternal love, solidarity, and respect for the social hierarchy on the other. For better or worse, a society has been formed. For 70 years, data on these animals - their bloodlines, behaviour, social rank, state of health, and genetic information - have been gathered and scrupulously recorded. Three renowned scientists - a psychologist, a neurobiologist and an evolutionary biologist - observe these primates of the Caribbean in order to understand the roots of our own human society.
