Der ESQ 1 war der erste Synthesizer der in Pennsylvania ansässigen Firma Ensoniq, die in den Mittachtzigern mit dem Low-Cost-Sampler Mirage einen Volltreffer landete. Er gilt bei vielen Synth-Freaks wegen seiner guten Klangeigenschaften als Geheimtipp und kann mit etwas Glück günstig auf dem Gebrauchtmarkt erworben werden. Der ESQ 1 ist mit einer hybriden Klangerzeugung ausgestattet, welche die digitalen Oszillatoren mit der klassischen analogen subtraktiven Synthese kombiniert. Nicht alltäglich war damals neben den Split- und Layerfähigkeiten auch der integrierte 8-Spur-Sequenzer, der den ESQ 1 zu einem Workstation-Vorläufer macht.
