The Spy Who Loved Me (1962) by Ian Fleming: Analysis and Overview
#jamesbond #ianfleming #thespywholovedme #booktube I review and analyze Ian Fleming's tenth James Bond novel, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1962). This is a bold experimental work written entirely from the female character's perspective and 007 only appears late in the story. It is the experimental Fleming previously seen in some of the short stories and is remarkable for the efforts made by the author to break free of formula. Sadly it was not received well upon original publication and that stigma has followed the book ever since. It has its shortcomings but remains a remarkable work for many reasons. More Bond fans need to give the book a chance and allow it to grow over rereads. 00:00 Introduction and Overview 4:23 Book analysis and defense 07:01 Plot Discussion First Act "Me" 8:59 Tinge of Psycho influence 11:49 This is the Fleming of Quantum of Solace 13:13 Fleming drew on his own history 14:35 Derek and Kurt reflections on Viv's past relationships 18:52 First Act used to draw the reader into Viv’s world 19:28 The masterful opening line and paragraph 21:15 Act II "Them" Horror and Slugsy 25:00 Act III "Him" arrival of Bond 26:08 Viv observing Bond, theme of Bond is not a hero 27:47 Rest of Act 3 is perfunctory.
