We Climbed Ben Nevis on 40% Odds — My Dad Did NOT Want to Come

My dad did not want to climb Ben Nevis after 96 miles on the West Highland Way. I decided we should at least “give it a try.” This is day 9 and 10 of our West Highland Way journey, where we attempt to climb Ben Nevis from Glen Nevis Campground, then walk the final few miles into Fort William to officially finish the trail. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland and the UK, and my dad really did not want to come with me. We started late after a night of heavy rain, climbed into wind, rain and snow, and somehow got lucky with a summit that looked more like the North Pole than Scotland in early May. After that, all that was left was the short walk into Fort William, the official end of the West Highland Way, and finding out whether my dad would ever agree to wild camping again. 🎒 Curious what gear I use for hiking, wild camping, and backpacking trips like this? I keep my current gear list here: https://trailsandbackroads.com/gear 🏔️ Whether you’re planning to climb Ben Nevis after the West Highland Way, wondering what Ben Nevis is like in early May, or thinking about hiking the West Highland Way with someone new to backpacking, I hope this gives you a realistic look at the final stretch. 🌍 I share honest stories and lessons from life outdoors: long-distance hiking, wild camping, road trips, travel adventures, and figuring it out as I go. 💬 Have you climbed Ben Nevis?
