ANDREAS GURSKY - Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf

ANDREAS GURSKY until February 3, 2012 - Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf The Düsseldorf-based artist Andreas Gursky, along with Candida Höfer, Thomas Ruff, and Thomas Struth, is among the most important contemporary photographic artists internationally. With his large-format works, but also through his captivating precision, Andreas Gursky seems to dissolve the very concept of photography and constantly re-examine the notion of the image. At the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, Andreas Gursky is presenting 60 works for the first time in 14 years, which he has specially curated for this exhibition. These include some of his latest digital photographic works, reminiscent of abstract painting. In his search for the painterly gesture, Gursky achieves astonishing results, which he presents in his characteristically oversized format. That Andreas Gursky rightly belongs among the most important photographic artists is particularly evident in his early works: his masterful eye for the moment! Above all, Gursky's works invite intense contemplation, which holds many surprises in store for the viewer. In works like "Frankfurt Airport," the image appears at first glance to be technically perfect and aesthetically pleasing, but a second look reveals an almost hidden humor. For example, the destination airports depict places that don't actually exist in that form (Cologne Central Station) or as airports (Plauen). And it is precisely this wink, this highlighting of imperfection, that makes the exhibition so worthwhile—also thanks to the excellent, non-chronological presentation. We were given an exclusive tour of the exhibition with Beat Wismer, the curator and director of the Museum Kunstpalast. Thank you!
