As soon as I was clear of the docks, I opened the throttles wide open (which on this boat means 30kts) and didn’t slow down until I arrived on scene even though that meant running though the idle speed zone at the Siesta Key Bridge at that speed. It turns out that it was not entirely necessary as while they had blown their exhaust hose, they had the state of mind to stuff a towel in there and slow the water down significantly. They still would’ve eventually sunk as their bilge pump had failed as well, but they were also in 3ft of water, so they weren’t going to completely sink regardless. AI-Generated Description: What started as a routine day on the water turned into a full-blown emergency response. I had just returned from a couple of tows and was prepping to close up the boat when I got a call from my dispatcher—urgent. The U.S. Coast Guard had contacted her about a 27-foot SeaRay taking on water south of Skiers Island. There were seven people onboard, including three kids, and the situation was deteriorating fast. Without hesitation, I fired up the engines and pushed the throttles wide open—hitting 30 knots—even blasting through the idle zone near Siesta Key Bridge. I knew it was risky, but in situations like this, time is everything. When I arrived on scene, I found a group that had kept calm under pressure. They had blown an exhaust hose but had the awareness to stuff a towel in it, slowing the flood of water. Their bilge pump had failed, and while they were still in shallow water (around 3 feet deep), they were definitely in trouble. Without intervention, that boat would’ve eventually gone under. This video captures the realities of marine emergency response—the pressure, the decision-making, and the importance of staying calm in the face of danger.
