COSTA de AVELLANEDA y QUINTAS de SARANDÍ - un lugar DISTINTO frente al RÍO #DRIVING 2024 ARGENTINA

Subscribe to the Channel Thank you very much / @pontadogi A few kilometers southeast of downtown Buenos Aires, between the lower stretches of the Sarandí and Santo Domingo streams, an area of peasant crops, irrigated with the management of the river's floods, developed as a result of the activity of Italian immigrants mainly Genoese who arrived there at the beginning of the twentieth century, which continues to this day. This area, of very high patrimonial value - due to its unique and typologically representative character - is today subject to serious environmental threats. In fact: it is the receptacle of clandestine solid waste dumps; its water system is highly polluted; it is affected by the atmospheric pollution originated by the Dock Sud petrochemical pole; and it is flanked, on both sides of both streams, by two gigantic urban solid waste landfills, in two areas that must be reconditioned and recovered. This characterization has been formulated by the anthropologist Mario Rabey, in his work on cultural landscapes of the southern metropolitan riverside.[1] The description of the Quintas that follows is based on another text by the same author.[2] The following description of the Quintas is based on another text by the same author. The “Quintas de Sarandí” area is practically the only relict of the peri-urban agro-ecosystem of the city of Buenos Aires, as it existed during the 19th century and, in many cases, well into the 20th century. Established in a portion of the Paraná - Plata Coastal Marginal Forest ecosystem, it is the product of the agricultural transformation of that ecosystem by immigrants from northern Italy (particularly from the Genoa region), who brought with them their rich knowledge and farming practices. Applying this knowledge and practices, they organized a sophisticated and original system of canals for irrigation and navigation. The use of the canals for irrigation allowed the establishment of an important area of small peri-urban peasant farms, which were for decades one of the main sources of horticultural supplies for the city of Buenos Aires. In addition, an important artisan agro-industry was established, which gave the area an identifying mark, as the producer of the sought-after coastal wines, an activity that has been preserved, although much reduced in volume, to the present day. The canals were also used for navigation in small boats with sails and oars, which allowed the transport of people and goods between the Quintas and the port of La Boca. This use was completely abandoned before the middle of the 20th century, with the development of land communication routes. According to the information provided, in this way continuity is given to a process initiated with the Eco Area, a nature reserve opened as a public walkway in 2018, which resumed the link between the city and the river. The video also shows the Parque del Río, located on the coast of Villa Domínico, This public space was built on a plot of land facing the coast and in which recreational spaces, a playground for children and a parking lot for vehicles were installed. In this way, continuity is given to a process initiated with the Eco Area, a natural reserve opened as a promenade to the public in 2018, which resumed the link between the city and the river.
