João Pedro and Misael, two young men from Minas Gerais, spent four years in prison for a crime they did not commit. They were unjustly convicted of the murder of a 96-year-old woman based on the false testimony of an accomplice of the real criminal. Their release occurred on May 13, 2026, after a criminal review in which the truth was revealed. The crime took place on January 20, 2022, when criminals broke into the victim's house looking for money, resulting in her death by asphyxiation. Police arrested João Pedro and Misael after the accomplice of the real murderer, Alain Menezes, gave a false statement under duress. The young men always maintained their innocence and presented alibis supported by family and neighbors, but were still convicted. Only years later did Alain confess the truth in letters, saying he had been coerced into incriminating them. New evidence derived from these letters allowed for a review of the case and the acquittal of the young men.
