Fire Damper, Smoke Damper, Fire & Smoke Damper l Working Principles with Animation Video

In this video, you can the requirements of how to install Fire Damper, Smoke Damper and Combination Fire & Smoke Damper. Generally, all dampers must have UL listing. UL refers to Underwriters Laboratories. UL 555 is the test standard for fire dampers; UL 555S is the test standard for smoke dampers. Combination fire/smoke dampers must meet the test requirements for both UL test standards that is UL 555 & UL 555S. During fire condition, fusible link in the damper melts at a specified temperature and it closes the damper. All fire and smoke dampers must be installed in a steel sleeve which has the thickness equal to the connected duct gauge thickness but not less than 26 gauge. This steel sleeve is normally factory supplied material with damper to minimize installation costs and to ensure that the required damper to sleeve fastening requirements are properly met. We need to make sure the retaining angle fasteners are not interfering with the operation of the damper. Sometime, retaining angles from the manufacturer comes with the pre-punched holes with 1 inch or 1.5 inches distance between the holes. It makes the fastening requirements easier at the site. Once the damper is installed, it should be connected to the adjacent ductwork like u see here. Some codes like International Building Code or IBC Needs the approved access panel near to the damper to perform inspection and maintenance. After the installation of dampers, in most of the project site, contractor apply the fire sealant around the retaining angles, it is some time accepted by the local civil defense or authority also.
