The abbreviation ES stands for ‘Einzylinder, Schwinge’ (Single-cylinder, Swingarm). In popular speech, the model was also known as ‘Eisensau,’ ‘Eisenschwein,’ or simply ‘Esse.’ The model was available in engine sizes of 125 cm³, 150 cm³, 175 cm³, 250 cm³, and 300 cm³. It was the first MZ model produced as a series, making it the direct predecessor of all MZ models manufactured in the GDR. True to its name, all ES-series machines featured a then highly modern full-swingarm chassis, praised for its ride quality. Additionally, the larger models (from 250 cm³) were suitable for sidecars.
