Epictetus was born in Hierapolis nearly 2,000 years ago and was later brought to Rome as a slave, where he lived in a wealthy and influential household with the former slave Epaphroditus. He was allowed to attend schools and thus studied under the Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus, who later became his mentor. After his release from slavery, he began teaching philosophy himself in Rome. When Emperor Domitian banished all philosophers from Rome, he went to Nicopolis in Greece, where he founded his own school and taught until his death. Epictetus is considered one of the most influential figures of late Stoicism.
