How To Clean Your Apple Watch Straps (Sport Loop, Braided Solo Band, Leather Link)

So one of the things I noticed with our Apple Watch accessories video was how unpleasant looking some of long term use straps were. So we decided to figure out how to clean them. Officially, according to Apple and then if that didn’t work, unofficially. Here’s the one thing that I’ve learned while making this video: I don’t wash my straps enough. There’s nothing about using chemicals in the cleaning instructions from Apple… Apple Watch Leather Link For the Leather Link, we noticed that the area around the wrist contact area getting dirty. After trying Apple’s method of cleaning, we decided to try using a leather upholstery cleaner. That did nothing either which was odd given that chemicals usually work. The last thing we did before giving up was to take a look at the strap using our microscope and realized that the discoloration was coming from the leather link actually being damaged. Apple Watch Sport Band/Solo Loop For the elastomer products, we had a couple of stains. On the Sport Band, the inside of the strap was leaving marks on the other strap. On the Solo Loop, the stain was right around the lug area. Now after the fresh water wipe down didn’t do anything with the stains, we decided to try a mixture of bleach and fresh water. We let the bands sit in the mixture for several hours and to our disappointment, the stains on the Sport Band didn’t disappear but the Solo Loop’s stain went away. Now after the bleach treatment, we noticed that the bands were brighter than before so that’s good to know. Apple Watch Sport Loop/Braided Solo Loop These two products that benefited the most from cleaning were the Sport Loops and Braided Solo Loops. Now the fresh water wipe down didn’t do anything for the bands so we decided to go with soaking the bands with OxyClean. Whatever is in the chemical does wonder’s for cleaning the strap. The container that we soaked the bands in definitely had some dirty water in it. The difference in the colors of bands was night and day after drying the bands and putting them side by side. For the Solo Loops, the darker loop didn’t really benefit (visually) from the cleaning but the orange strap that we had went from looking like I spent my days rolling my wrist in dirt to looking like it was brand new. The last thing we’ll say about this is that your bands will smell like OxyClean. So we suggest rinsing your bands with water a few times or running it with a load of laundry.
