The attempt on his life took place on May 13, 1981, the anniversary of the first apparition at Fatima. The Vatican document on the Message of Fatima states that after the attack, the Pope requested an envelope containing the third part of the Secret of Fatima and considered entrusting the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. A year later, on May 13, 1982, John Paul II traveled to Fatima and entrusted the world to Our Lady of Fatima. He later visited Fatima in 1991 and 2000; during his pilgrimage in 2000, he beatified Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
