Rochus Misch was Adolf Hitler's personal bodyguard, telephone operator, and close assistant from 1940 until the end of the Third Reich. He was present at his official residences, including the Berghof, and was part of the inner circle during the final days of the Berlin bunker. He witnessed the decisive moments of the regime's collapse, the disintegration of the command structure, and the final reactions of those around him. After attempting to escape, he was captured by the Red Army and taken to the Soviet Union. He spent nine years in various prisons and labor camps, in extreme conditions and under constant surveillance. He passed through facilities in Moscow, Kazakhstan, and Leningrad, until his repatriation to Germany in 1954, where he reunited with his family and began a new life as a merchant in Berlin. Over the years, he was identified as the last direct witness from Hitler's inner circle. He died in 2013, at the age of 96, after a life marked by proximity to power and the consequences of having been there.
