Every October your neighbors bag up hundreds of pounds of free potting mix and leave it on the curb for the garbage truck. Meanwhile every April you drive to the garden center and pay $12 for a bag of dead peat harvested from a 10,000-year-old bog. The irony is painful once you see it. This video is about leaf mold — the most slept-on material in gardening. Not compost. Different process, different biology, different end product. Compost is bacterial and nutrient-rich. Leaf mold is fungal and structure-rich. It holds 500% of its dry weight in water, re-wets easily (unlike peat, which turns hydrophobic the second it dries out), improves clay AND sandy soil simultaneously, and comes pre-loaded with the mycorrhizal spores that every other video in this series has been telling you to protect. The process is almost embarrassingly simple. Stuff leaves in bags, poke some holes, add a splash of water, forget about them for a year. Or build a wire bin. Or just make a pile. The fungi do literally all the work. You provide a corner of the yard and some patience.
