Christ Church Rampant: How the Doug Wilson cult destroys lives - Bekka Poznik

Today I spoke with Bekka Poznick in a profound and emotional interview about the overwhelming trauma caused by Doug Wilson and Toby Sumpter, leaders in the Christ Church cult in Moscow, Idaho. Bekka and I touched on many topics, including: • Growing up in Christ Church as it got established and as Doug Wilson expanded his power. • Seeing the church embrace child baptism (paedobaptism). • Placing her faith in Christ as her Savior as a young child. • Slowly but increasingly distrusting Pastor Doug Wilson. • Experiencing her deep questions and concerns being shut down as quickly as possible. • Facing the male-ruled culture at Christ Church and Trinity Reformed Church. • Seeing young men taught to be more powerful, and women to be submissive. • Being taught that masturbation is sin. • Observing the strongly anti-gay mentality of the Christ Church community and how they mocked and hurt many people. • Thinking that she was in danger of burning in hell because she was exploring various normal life experiences. • Fearing that the reason she seemed "worldly" would not "repent" was because she was probably not one of the "Elect," and facing immense depression as a result. • Being told by Pastor Toby Sumpter that she was selfish and had "the moral standing of a rapist" and was selfish because she chose to move away from Moscow and move in with her boyfriend. • Being excommunicated by Trinity Reformed Church in 2018. • Having panic attacks for many years after the abuse that she received in Moscow, Idaho. • The importance of escaping toxic and controlling communities. • The dynamics of healing, forgiveness, and moving on from severe religious trauma and abuse, especially in the context of aggressive and unrepentant cult leaders. • Realizing both that Christ Church is truly a highly controlling cult, but also eventually realizing that Christianity itself is mythology.
