The deep ocean covers most of the planet, yet it remains one of the least explored regions on Earth. More than 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, yet much of the seabed remains uncharted in detail. As depth increases, pressure, extreme cold, and the total absence of light create conditions that for centuries were considered incompatible with complex life. Places like hydrothermal vents and extreme ecosystems serve as models for studying ocean moons like Europa or Enceladus, where similar life forms powered by chemical, not solar, energy may exist. At the same time, the deep faces emerging threats like underwater mining and industrial pollution, even in the most remote reaches of the planet. Each new expedition demonstrates that the ocean remains an uncharted frontier, full of undiscovered species and questions that could change biology as we know it today.
