On the dawn of July 18th, 1996, the LTTE launched a massive attack on the Mullaitivu Army Base, which housed the Sri Lankan Army's 25th Brigade. Under the leadership of Karuna Amman, the LTTE forces successfully overran the base within 48 hours, inflicting a devastating loss of an estimated 1,500 soldiers on the Sri Lankan military. Very few defenders managed to escape. Nearly 29 years later, I was fortunate to visit the grounds of this historic battle. In this video, we walk through the camp as it stands today, exploring the very areas where one of the most brutal and significant battles of the Sri Lankan Civil War unfolded. Historical Context & Insight: The Mullaitivu base in 1996 was a massive installation, but it was also profoundly isolated. Situated deep within territory dominated by the LTTE, the camp was cut off from government controlled land. Its survival depended entirely on supplies delivered by sea and air, making it a vulnerable strategic outpost. Many analysts have since argued that establishing such a large, isolated base in the heart of enemy territory was a significant strategic miscalculation by the political and military leadership of the time. The tragic loss of so many lives at Mullaitivu served as a harsh lesson in warfare, highlighting the perils of overextension and inadequate logistical planning.
