The Lamban rhythm is incredibly fun, and can teach you a lot about playing djembe (especially how the djembe interacts with other instruments in the ensemble, like bass drums). Also known as Sandia, Lamba, Djelidon or Djelifoli, Lamban is a rhythm played in honour of the Djeli or Jali (also known as Griot), who are a West African caste of oral historians/musicians. Traditionally this rhythm is not played on djembe, but rather on Djeli instruments, like the balafon (wooden xylophone), djelidunun (Djeli bass drum) and tama (talking drum). In modern times, it has been interpreted on djembe drums as well, and so this lesson covers that modern interpretation.
