Word, statement, text, sound, communication, thought? What is the boundary between the linguistic and the extra-linguistic? How does Enem work this concept in its questions? Come find out with professor Mercedes Bonorino, from the Free Enem Course! In the communication process, all elements are important when exercising their function, but one of these functions of language will always be prominent. Learn about the six functions of language below: 1. Function of referential language For example: in the case of a medicine leaflet, the most important thing is to convey information. Therefore, the focus is on the referent (content). This does not mean that the structure is irrelevant, since it generates a specific genre – the manual. But even so, the referential is the most relevant. 2. Function of poetic language As the name suggests, the structure of the message becomes more important than the message itself. This happens a lot in song lyrics. Many songs talk about love, but not all of them move you, because they don't say it in the same way. 3. Function of emotive language The emotive function is the one focused on the sender, that is, the one who sends the message. A great example is the diary, which presents the worldviews of its narrator. 4. Function of conative or appellative language In the conative or appellative function, the focus is on the recipient. The appealing language of Internet ads, of marketing done on radio and TV. This is imperative language. In other words, the objective of the message in the function of Conative language is to convince the listener of something – which happens a lot in advertising. 5. Function of metalinguistic language The metalinguistic function occurs when the focus of the message is to reflect on its own structure. For example, metalanguage occurs when a chronicle in which the author reflects on what it is like to write a chronicle, a film about making a film, a book in which the protagonist is writing a book. 6. Function of phatic language The function of phatic language is one of the most present in our daily lives. Do you know when you are having a long conversation with a friend and just reply “yes” so that they know you are listening? Your intention was just to keep the channel of communication open. Or when, in an email or message, you write “Good morning, how are you?” just to introduce a subject, not to really find out how a person is. This is the phatic function, because you just opened or tried to keep the communication channel open. Questions? Leave them in the comments. ;) ⏱ TIMETABLE / TOPICS 00:00 What are language functions? 01:07 What are the functions? 02:49 Easy question 06:32 Medium question 08:38 Difficult question 🔴 WATCH ALSO Conative function • FUNCÃO CONATIVA DA LINGUAGEM | INTERPRETAÇ...
