Tesla's second-quarter 2026 earnings were announced, causing its stock price to plummet by over 14%. This represents a loss of $140 billion in market capitalization in a single day. While sales reached a record high, profits fell significantly short of market expectations. Revenue was $28.24 billion (up 26% year-over-year), while non-GAAP earnings per share were $0.33, significantly below the expected $0.53. Operating profit fell 57%, and the operating profit margin dropped from 4.1% to 1.4%. However, a closer look at the figures reveals a different picture than the headlines suggest. Most symbolically, consider the gross profit compared to the previous quarter. While sales increased 26% from $22.39 billion to $28.24 billion, gross profit only increased by a mere 0.7%, from $4.72 billion to $4.751 billion. This means that the $5.8 billion increase in sales only generated a profit of $31 million. The reason behind this is that the unit price decreased due to the discontinuation of the high-priced Model S and X and the sale of the cheaper Model 3 and Y. This was compounded by a 47% increase in operating expenses and a 67% decrease in regulated credit revenue. Furthermore, free cash flow was negative $1.09 billion, only one-third of the market's expected negative $3.25 billion. I read out the forecast in yesterday's video, so this also checks the results.
