Using and configuring DNS servers in Linux
DNS, while being one of the core services that operates the Internet, is also often blamed for problems. Misconfigurations are rampant and if DNS isn’t working, probably nothing else is. In previous episodes we’ve covered troubleshooting, but in this episode we will quickly cover client-side configuration and tools, then, in the deeper dive, cover server-side DNS. When should one use dnsmasq, unbound, or bind? We will also configure bind as an authoritative nameserver for the example.com zone and populate different zone files with different types of records: A, PTR, CNAME, MX, SOA, TXT, and maybe a couple of others (as well as talking about what these different types of records are used for). Lastly, we will demonstrate updating records and managing the bind service so that the updated records are made available. - - - - Critical Administration Skills for Red Hat Enterprise Linux: Whether you are new to Linux or new to RHEL, join our hosts for a hands-on look into the commands and processes, ask questions, and grow your knowledge.
