Set in Olympia, Washington, SORRY ABOUT THE MESS follows trans trainwreck Alice Peril, a punk singer trying to survive a badly timed breakup, while navigating an actual supernatural apocalypse with way more wit than the situation probably deserves. The project is a case study in how ambitious independent screen content gets made, when it doesn’t fit neatly into traditional funding models. It is also, at this particular moment in Australian public life, a story about a trans woman deciding her story is worth telling, finding a community that agrees, and building something from the ground up. At a time when trans people globally are at the centre of heated public debate but rarely given space to speak for themselves, SATM is a different kind of story: a creation, not a controversy.
