"Pride and Prejudice" is a 1940 American film adaptation of Jane Austen's 1813 novel "Pride and Prejudice", starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. Directed by Robert Z. Leonard, the screenplay was written by Aldous Huxley and Jane Murfin, adapted specifically from the stage adaptation by Helen Jerome, in addition to Jane Austen's novel. British actors Laurence Olivier (as Mr. Darcy) and Greer Garson (as Elizabeth Bennet) star in Pride and Prejudice (1940), the first Hollywood adaptation of Jane Austen's famous novel. Although it preserves the central plot of the work, the film takes great artistic liberties in tone and setting, moving away from historical fidelity to adopt a more Victorian and romantic style, while Austen's original work is set in the Georgian Age (between 1795 and 1813, the year of publication).
