She was so beautiful that even Tezcatlipoca abducted her. Xochiquetzal, the Mexica goddess of beauty, reigned over desire… and over the ruin of anyone who gazed upon her. In Mexica mythology, Xochiquetzal ("precious flower") was the goddess of love, beauty, flowers, fertility, and art. She dwelled in Tamoanchan, the paradisiacal garden of the flowering tree, surrounded by butterflies and hummingbirds. Patroness of weavers and artisans, she embodied "in xochitl in cuicatl"—the flower and the song—the Mexica ideal of art and poetry. Wife of Tlaloc and abducted by Tezcatlipoca, Xochiquetzal was never subdued: her beauty was power, and her desire, a trap from which no warrior or god could escape. In this song, we transform Xochiquetzal into a dark ethno-metal ritual: operatic female vocals, the resounding huehuetl and teponaztli drums, clay flutes and conch shells, metallic guitars, and a chant in Classical Nahuatl.
