1 HYPERFLEXION/LDR/Rollkur at the Spanish Riding School
Part one HYPERFLEXION/LDR/Rollkur at the Spanish Riding School THE VIENNESE ART OF CLASSICAL RIDING – A SWANSONG ? A location determination documented in a video series In today's fast-paced world, many precious human values such as sympathy and empathy for others are lost. It is the age of quick success, regardless of the means, as seen in business politics worldwide. Money has become one of the most important factors of our time. You must achieve as much as possible as fast as possible. How this gets done is often questionable. And that is exactly the point: all of these societal changes have come to affect riding. The traditional values of classical training are too slow, too hard to learn for many "trainers" or those who would like to be trainers. They don't bring success and easy money quickly enough. Short–term success is achievable in competition, with interchangeable horses trained with quick–and–easy methods. It is not possible to apply the same methods as a model for classical equestrianism. Such a delicate balance is not sustainable long–term in an institution such as the Spanish Riding School. This course can still be changed, not only to fulfill its legal mandate, but also to restore the ethical and cultural position of traditional Viennese equine art in today’s horse world. When the management of the Spanish Riding School does not seem able to manage its cultural heritage responsibly, then it needs a new policy. Dr.Ulrike Thiel To be continued At the turn of the year 2021 I watched the broadcast from the Spanish Riding School and it just made me sad to see that there was a copy of what you could experience there in around the 90s. And even basic criteria for the training of rider and horse were often no longer met, which used to be a matter of course in this institution. For me, the classic work at the SRS was of immense importance in order to understand the training of the riding horse and to be able to implement it myself (in comparison to this, amateurish but in the pursuit of correctness). I had wonderful teachers and interlocutors from the SRS who helped me to understand and understand the importance of a classical training path according to the SRS directives. Above all, that this path is in complete harmony with the latest findings in psychomotor and biomechanics as well as training theory. And also that you can see a lot in the horse's movement pattern, and what influence "little things" can already have on the mental and physical flow of movement and movement planning of the horse, and thus also on its well-being as a movement animal. If this path, as has unfortunately happened there at the SRS since 2000, is consciously abandoned, and training techniques are introduced that counteract the classic criteria and also no longer pay attention to many "small things", then what is actually the task is lost This institution should be to preserve the classical art of riding and to show it in order to get the picture in the heads of all viewers as it can look like, if .......... this creates an image that every rider strives for can help and inspire every level, even if you will never reach the final state. The path is then the goal, and it doesn't take shortcuts or concessions to other methods that don't fit. Then the way does not lead to Rome but you end up somewhere else. And that's exactly how it felt to me when I watched the video on ORF yesterday. I then took out my old videos again to be able to visualize this image and the goal and the path again. The Spanish Riding School in Vienna has survived two world wars and several other catastrophes since its founding in 1565. So it seems that the 450th anniversary celebration could have been seen as a the farewell performance of Viennese Classical Horsemanship. We hear more and more criticism of the market–oriented exploitation of the school and the associated State Stud at Piber. In recent years we can see its creeping towards modern dressage. The consequences: in place of School Stallions, trained to the highest level with patience and respect, who dance in harmony with their riders, exhibiting the brilliance and expression of the High School, we see pictures that have been around for years, quite rightly criticized within the sport. I myself watched the use of Hyperflexion/Rollkur/LDR at the SRS and the SRS showed that they where doing it in a film published by them in 2014 although rejecting its officially.
