Video 26: Gasflaschen Tauschen und Füllen in Europa auf unserer Tour

In Germany, we usually carry three gas cylinders: 1 x 11 kg gray steel (as it's the most common type) 2 x 11 kg aluminum cylinders (considerably more expensive, but much lighter) When we're abroad (e.g., France, Spain, Morocco), we buy a local gas cylinder. In Spain, we bought one from CEPSA at a gas station (REPSOL is another option). You have to sign a contract, but that wasn't a problem. You only need an ID card. IMPORTANT: Propane and butane gas are available in Spain, and the cylinders sometimes look almost identical. Butane gas is unusable below 0 degrees Celsius and produces more rust when burned. We only use propane. To connect to the German gas system, you need an adapter that fits over the cylinder's nozzle. Foreign cylinders don't have their own valve or shut-off valve. However, you need an adapter to connect to the German gas system. But be aware: You'll need an adapter (usually brass-colored) because the included adapter doesn't have a seal for the hose connection. It's best to buy the adapter in Germany from a dealer or online. Make sure it's not too tall and fits in the gas locker. Due to the handles on top, these gas cylinders are usually a bit taller than German ones. Most foreign cylinders are also slightly larger in diameter, so two of them wouldn't fit in our gas locker. One German and one Spanish cylinder would just about fit, though. For refilling gas cylinders abroad, we carry a set of four adapters (for all sorts of countries). So far, we haven't needed them because we haven't found a gas station in Spain that refills German gas cylinders. According to the internet and some campers we've met, there are some! Sometimes, you need an additional adapter (usually aluminum-colored) to refill at a regular gas station, and they don't always have these in stock.
