Atom or Molecule? How to Tell from Formulas & Particle Diagrams

⚛️ What is the difference between an atom and a molecule? In this video, you’ll learn the difference between atoms and molecules step by step. We start with the definition of an atom and explain why an atom is the smallest part of an element that can still keep the properties of that element. Even though atoms can be broken into smaller particles, if we break an atom apart, it will no longer retain the properties of the original element. Then, we learn how chemical symbols work. You’ll see that symbols can have 1, 2, or sometimes 3 letters, but they must always start with a capital letter. This helps us identify different types of atoms in chemical formulas. After that, we move into molecules. You’ll learn what a molecule is, how to recognize molecules in chemical formulas, and how to decide whether a formula represents an atom or a molecule. We also practice with particle diagrams and learn how to tell whether a diagram shows separate atoms or molecules joined together.
