But why this detour across the border? The German Embryo Protection Act of 1990 makes egg donation a criminal offense. Doctors risk three years in prison for transferring a foreign egg or fertilizing the egg if it is not implanted in the woman from whom it came. This means that fertilizing or transferring donated eggs is illegal. The justification at the time: "split motherhood" harms children. Is this even still true?
